Stainless Steel 440C is an alloy of high-carbon martensitic stainless steel with approximately 1.0–1.2% carbon and 16–18% chromium. It attains high hardness values of up to 58–60 HRC following heat treatment, along with superior wear and abrasion resistance. Though it provides excellent corrosion resistance in mild conditions, it is not as resistant as austenitic stainless steels. The alloy is ferromagnetic, can be heat-treated to offer better mechanical properties, and is extensively utilized wherever edge retention and hardness are essential.

Stainless Steel 440C hex bars find widespread application in high-hardness and wear-resistant applications. Some of the common applications are bearings, valve parts, cutting tools, surgical tools, and precision machine components. In aerospace and vehicle manufacturing, 440C is preferred for parts that need to be withstanding mechanical stress and retain sharpness. Although not recommended for severely corrosive conditions, 440C hex bars function very well for dry or weakly corrosive conditions where hardness and durability are paramount.
