Stainless Steel 431 is a martensitic stainless steel alloy with about 16-18% chromium and 0.2-0.25% carbon, and with minor quantities of nickel and molybdenum. It has high tensile strength, usually between 750 and 1,200 MPa following heat treatment, and satisfactory toughness and hardness. The alloy has moderate resistance to corrosion, especially against stress corrosion cracking, and is suitable for service in conditions of mild to moderate corrosive exposure. Stainless Steel 431 also possesses good machinability and may be heat treated for the enhancement of mechanical properties.
