Semih Metals is a leading supplier of Stainless Steel 416 Hex Bars, known for their excellent machinability, magnetic properties, and low friction characteristics that help reduce galling and seizing. The machinability of SS 416 Hex Bars can be further enhanced by the addition of sulfur, which forms manganese sulfide inclusions, a common feature in many free-machining stainless steels. Alloy 416 Hex Bars offer resistance to mild corrosive environments, steam, fresh water, organic substances, various mild acids, and petroleum products, along with good strength when hardened and tempered. Thanks to its affordability and superior machinability, Grade 416 Hex Bars are frequently utilized in a highly tempered state, where the additives also function as chip breakers, significantly improving machining rates by up to 85%. Type 416 Hex Bars is a martensitic, free-machining grade that can be heat treated to achieve higher strength and hardness.
SS 416 Hex Bar is composed primarily of chromium (12-14%), with carbon (0.15%) and manganese (1.00%) being key components. It also contains sulfur (0.15%) to enhance machinability. The mechanical properties of SS 416 include a tensile strength of 85,000-100,000 psi, yield strength of 45,000-60,000 psi, and a hardness of 30-35 HRC in the hardened state. It exhibits good machinability, moderate corrosion resistance, and can be hardened by heat treatment to improve strength and hardness. The alloy is magnetic and resistant to mild corrosive environments and organic materials.

The SS 416 Hex Bar is widely used in applications requiring high machining and moderate corrosion resistance. Ideal for production of shafts, valves, pumps, gears and fasteners. Because of its resistance to harsh environmental conditions, it is commonly used in automotive, aerospace and medical applications. The excellent manufacturing technology of this material also makes it suitable for the manufacture of complex components such as screws, bolts and fittings. In addition, SS 416 is used on hot water, fresh water and petroleum products.
SS 416 hex bars offer excellent machinability due to their high sulfur content, allowing for faster cutting speeds and reduced tool wear. They also provide good corrosion resistance, making them ideal for applications requiring precision and durability in harsh environments.
SS 416 contains higher sulfur content for improved machinability, but this reduces its corrosion resistance compared to other stainless steel grades like SS 304 or SS 316. The sulfur content interferes with the formation of a protective oxide layer, making SS 416 more susceptible to corrosion in aggressive environments.
SS 416 hex bars are commonly used in the aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing industries. Their primary applications include shafts, valves, pump components, and fasteners. Due to their excellent machinability, they are ideal for producing precise parts in high-volume machining environments, especially where moderate corrosion resistance is required.
