Aluminum 2024 forgings consist primarily of aluminum alloyed with 3.8–4.9% copper, 1.2–1.8% magnesium, 0.3–0.9% manganese, 0.5% silicon, and 0.2–0.5% iron with trace amounts of other elements including zinc and titanium. This alloy exhibits excellent fatigue resistance and high strength, which has made it applicable in aerospace engineering. This has a minimum tensile strength of 470 MPa and minimum yield strength of 325 MPa, with a property of elongation of 15% in 50 mm. It has good machinability and can be heat-treated to improve the properties further, although it has reduced corrosion resistance compared with other alloys.
