Tool and Die Steel W1 is water-hardening tool steel containing a high proportion of carbon (preferably 0.90–1.05%) and a small amount of alloying elements. It is famous for gaining high hardness with mere water quenching and provides outstanding edge retention and wear resistance in hardened state. W1 steel normally attains hardness values between 60–66 HRC after heat treatment. It possesses good machinability in annealed condition but may be susceptible to distortion and cracking if not properly quenched. W1 is most suitable for applications where high edge sharpness and surface hardness are more important than impact resistance.

Tool and Die Steel W1 bars are recyclable, reducing environmental impact. However, their production involves energy-intensive processes. Sustainable practices can enhance their eco-friendliness, such as using recycled materials and cleaner manufacturing methods.
Tool and Die Steel W1 bars are not highly resistant to corrosion, as they are high-carbon steels. They can rust when exposed to moisture, requiring proper maintenance, such as coating or regular oiling, to prevent corrosion.
Tool and Die Steel W1 bars are not ideal for structural applications due to their high carbon content, which makes them brittle and less ductile. They are better suited for tools, dies, and cutting applications where hardness and wear resistance are crucial. For structural applications, steels with better toughness and strength, like carbon or alloy steels, are preferred.
W1 tool steel bars are extensively used for applications demanding high wear resistance with sharp edges at moderate loading conditions. Typical applications include cutting tools, engraving tools, knives, reamers, chisels, and punches. It finds extensive use in woodworking and general-purpose tooling wherein edge retention is of prime importance. Because of its tendency to harden in water, W1 is generally applied in small tools or parts where a small amount of distortion upon quenching is acceptable. Although not suitable for high-impact or high-heat purposes, W1 provides an economical answer for high-precision tools that need a hard, keen edge.
