Tool and Die Steel S1 is an impact-resistant tool steel renowned for outstanding toughness, high-impact strength, and moderate wear resistance. It generally includes carbon (0.5–0.6%), chromium, tungsten, and vanadium, which impart its hardenability and strength. S1 steel is easily machinable in the annealed state and retains its strength and toughness after heat treatment. It generally exhibits a typical hardness of 54–58 HRC after tempering and hardening. The steel is also resistant to softening at high temperatures and hence can be used for hot and cold work operations with high impact.

When choosing Tool and Die Steel S1 bars, consider hardness, wear resistance, toughness, machinability, heat treatment capabilities, and the specific requirements of the application to ensure optimal performance and durability.
Tool and Die Steel S1 bars resist corrosion due to their alloy composition, which includes elements like chromium and molybdenum. These elements form a protective oxide layer, enhancing resistance to oxidation and rust.
Tool and Die Steel S1 bars should be stored in a dry, clean environment, away from moisture and chemicals. Use racks to prevent contact with the ground and minimize risk of rusting or damage.
S1 tool steel bars are generally applied in uses where optimum toughness and impact resistance at both hot and cold temperatures are needed. The most common applications include shears, punches, shear blades, dies, and forming tools that are subjected to repeated impact or shock loading. In metal stamping and forging, S1 best suits tools withstanding high mechanical stress. It is also applied in heavy machinery manufacturing and aerospace, where tool brittle fracture must be prevented. The fact that S1 can withstand cracking and retain hardness under stress makes it a reliable option in heavy-duty tool and die use.
