Tool and Die Steel O1 is a high-carbon, oil-hardening tool steel with the typical composition of 0.9% carbon, 1.0–1.2% manganese, and minute quantities of chromium, tungsten, and vanadium. It is renowned for its great wear resistance, edge holding capacity, and good stability in dimensions during heat treatment. O1 oil hardens, which reduces distortion over water-hardening steels. It undergoes a normal hardness of 57–63 HRC after sufficient heat treatment and possesses good toughness and machinability in annealed state, becoming ideal for intricate or precision-machined tools.

When choosing O1 tool and die steel bars, consider factors like hardness, wear resistance, machinability, heat treatment requirements, intended application (e.g., cutting, stamping), and cost-effectiveness for long-term use.
O1 tool and die steel bars have moderate resistance to corrosion due to their carbon content and alloy composition. However, they are not stainless and can rust without proper maintenance, such as coating or regular oiling.
O1 tool and die steel can be welded, but it's crucial to preheat and control cooling rates to prevent cracking. Post-welding heat treatment is recommended to restore its hardness and properties.
O1 tool steel bars are often utilized in applications where surface hardness is high, there is good wear resistance, and dimensional accuracy. Some common applications are dies, punches, cutting tools, broaches, knives, gauges, and plastic and rubber processing molds. It finds particular popularity in applications where fine detail and sharp edges are critical, for instance in woodworking or engraving tools. Because of its oil-hardening property, O1 provides tighter control over distortion compared to water-hardening grades and is, therefore, suitable for tools whose dimensions and surface finishes have to be precise after heat treatment.
