SAE 1015 round bars and rods consist mostly of iron containing approximately 0.13–0.18% carbon, 0.30–0.60% manganese, and small amounts of phosphorus and sulfur. This low-carbon steel possesses fair strength and hardness and great ductility and formability. It possesses a standard tensile strength of approximately 440–550 MPa and yield strength of about 250–300 MPa. SAE 1015 is machinable, weldable, and cold-workable, which makes it an ideal candidate for precision forming applications or where surface hardness is enhanced by carburizing without sacrificing core ductility.
