Stainless steel 303 round bars and rods consist mostly of 17–19% chromium and 8–10% nickel, with the addition of sulfur (0.15% min) to improve machinability. This composition leads to good corrosion resistance in mildly corrosive service and excellent machined surface finish. The material has a typical tensile strength of 500–750 MPa and yield strength of 200–450 MPa. Although less corrosion-resistant than 304, 303 provides sufficient resistance for a lot of industrial applications. It is non-magnetic when annealed and cannot be strengthened by heat treatment but has greater strength by cold working.
